Emily Hinchman scored 1:10 into overtime to give Geneva a stunning 1-0 victory over top-seeded St. Charles North in a Class 3A Bartlett Sectional semifinal Tuesday at Millenium Field in Streamwood.

The second semifinal between Bartlett and Conant was suspended at halftime with Conant leading 1-0 on a goal by Courtney Raetzman. The game will be completed at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The play came after the underdog Vikings (11-7-3) were awarded a rare indirect free kick inside the St. Charles North penalty area. Sarah Tennant tapped the ball to a surprisingly wide-open Hinchman, who sent a 10-yard shot from a severe angle inside the right post.

“I thought they were going to be running at me, so Sarah did a great job of tapping the ball, getting them moving,” said Hinchman, who takes most of Geneva’s free kicks. “I tried not to take as many steps back as I usually do to run onto the ball. I just wanted to place it because I knew from that angle it was going to be a tough shot.”

The North Stars (14-2-3) dominated regulation, outshooting Geneva 13-4. But they didn’t have many solid scoring chances except for an Alex Messacar goal with 3:05 left that was disallowed because of an offsides call.

“We know some of their girls and how strong they are up top, so everyone was doing their best to keep them from getting any chances,” said Tennant, whose team won its second straight overtime playoff game. “We were all on our toes and ready the whole time.”
